The meanings of the words are quite similar; a method for achieving an end. The differences in types of industry, clients, and projects call for one method or another. A plan is an arrangement, a pattern, a program, or a scheme for a definite purpose. A plan is most useful when staying well organized and on-track is the highest priority.

It came about because while we expect on paper most people could match these three words to their appropriate definitions, in practice, they get confused. So to address the definitions in practice, I thought it might be fun to examine their purpose for their employer. A strategy is a solution to move from where you are now A to where you want to be B …or put another way, it is what you want to happen to achieve an end. Strategy is a class of solution that deals with uncertainty — the possibility that opposing forces may inhibit you reaching B or reaching it in acceptably good form.

Difference Between Planning and Strategy

It is not uncommon that the term strategic plan and business plan get confused in the business world. Before beginning your strategy implementation, take a look at the difference between the two terms to ensure you are on the path to success. While a strategic plan is a type of business plan, there are several important distinctions between the two types that are worth noting. Larger organizations with multiple business units and a wide variety of products frequently start their annual planning process with a corporate-driven strategic plan. It is often followed by departmental plans and marketing plans that work down from the Strategic Plan. Smaller companies and start-up companies typically use only a business plan to develop all aspects of the business on paper, obtain funding and then start the business.

In this conception, strategy is manifested as a long list of initiatives with timeframes associated and resources assigned. But how does a strategic plan of this sort differ from a budget? Many people with whom I work find it hard to distinguish between the two and wonder why a company needs to have both. And I think they are right to wonder. The vast majority of strategic plans that I have seen over 30 years of working in the strategy realm are simply budgets with lots of explanatory words attached.

People use strategy, plans and tactics to accomplish successful outcomes in their business projects and personal goals. The three concepts work together and are, in fact, interdependent on each other. You cannot develop plans without a strategy, or tactics without a plan. A solid competitive strategy helps businesses gain market share.

These two terms, often used interchangeably are far from the same … Each is a completely different concept. A plan is usually a list of steps taken to accomplish a goal. A plan tackles questions like how, when, where, who, and what? A plan is a good thing to have. In fact, it is vital to the success of almost any effort.

The words get used interchangeably. Then, to be executed, it becomes a change initiative in the form of a program of work, or part of other programs. And programs are executed as projects. So a single strategy may be executed under several different plans — program and project management plans.

The Difference Between a Strategy, a Plan, and a Process

A business needs to have both a strategic plan and a budget. The strategic plan lays out the direction and goals of the business and guidelines for actions to achieve those goals, while the budget looks at the money needed to support achieving those goals. Budgeting is only one part of the strategic planning process. Many approaches to strategic planning are available. One approach is to start with a strategic analysis of where the organization is now, including its strengths and weaknesses and the economic, social, political and technical environment in which the business operates. The next step is to decide what direction the business wants to head; this process may involve developing a mission statement or strategic philosophy and setting goals. The next step is to identify tactics or action steps for achieving strategic goals.

It decides beforehand, what, when, how the task is to be accomplished. It is the skill of managing affairs of the enterprise. In the business, one might come across with the terms planning and strategy, end number of times. Planning is the basic function of management, that tries to take a peep into future. On the other hand, strategy, is one of the components of planning and is also known as interpretative planning. The two terms have different meanings and usage in the business world.
