On the Influence of Literature on Science Sarah Dillon bio Scholars of Literature and Science studies have always maintained that literature influences science as much as science influences literature. In Literature and Science , his contribution to the two cultures debate, Aldous Huxley asserts that "it goes without saying, between the Two Cultures the traffic of learning and understanding must flow in both directions—from science to literature, as well as from literature to science. Rousseau acknowledges that "there is no reason to disbelieve on logical or epistemological grounds that literature and science affect each other reciprocally. That is, that each influences the other in just about the same degree, although conceivably in different ways. He continues,. It is also probably valid to assume, although it would be practically impossible to prove, that science shapes literature to the same degree that imaginative [End Page ] literature shapes science.

Essays analysing the decline of Aldous Huxley as a novelist have become a commonplace of literary criticism over the past two decades, yet he continues to be read and few writers equal his ability to make moral concepts exciting, to animate ideas and clothe them with life and vitality. In this study of the nine major novels, from Crome Yellow to Island , Mr Bowering offers a positive evaluation Huxley's achievements as a novelist of ideas, as the moralist of a scientific age, and as an ironist worthy to be compared with Swift. He shows how the conflicting claims of morality and art must be judged in relation to Huxley's work as a whole and to this search for a way of life which would 'fit all the facts of experience'. All the principle novels require some knowledge of Huxley's source materials to be adequately understood and Mr Bowering is particularly informative on this score. His discussion indeed attempts to set the novels in the widest possible area of reference.

Aldous Huxley and the Mysticism of Science pp Cite as. At the start of the twentieth century, our picture of reality and our notions of how we come to know reality changed. Huxley was a spokesman for an era which institutionalized doubt Giddens Absolutes had fallen, axioms had collapsed and centuries of science were shown to be fundamentally inexact, with the result that nothing was certain, Huxley concluded, except change Olive In the novel Time Must Have a Stop , De Vries thus argues that the most noteworthy events of the twentieth century have not been political but scientific. This exploration, Huxley realized, had a very important consequence: it provided a clear demonstration of the conventionality and limitation of human perception, both in range and degree of objectivity. In the rather curiously running conflict, which some see as an illusion and others as a street fight, between Snow's "Two Cultures," Aldous Huxley has left his final testament in this very stimulating and useful series of essays.

This study argues that the novels of Aldous Huxley written reflect the influence of Charles Darwin's The Origin of Species on the loss of faith and decline of traditional spiritual values representative of those times. An introduction places Huxley, his work and ideas, against the background of the late 19th century literary and scientific scene. It examines his position as a writer of popularity and influence in the years between the World Wars, in relation to his struggle to achieve a new perspective and sense of value. It also places Huxley in a critical context, suggesting that, while the decline in his literary reputation over the past 40 years reflects his weaknesses as a writer, his contribution to 20th century literature's revaluation of the role of man in an evolving universe, although generally overlooked, is significant. The first chapter looks at the ways in which Huxley's first two novels, Crome Yellow and Antic Hay , express his growing sense of the social and spiritual isolation of the individual in an evolving world, a world described by Darwin as 'an inextricable web of affinities'.

Literature and Science , published in September , was Aldous Huxley 's last book prior to his death two months later. The grandson of Thomas Henry Huxley , Charles Darwin 's "bulldog," and the grand-nephew of English poet and essayist Matthew Arnold , Aldous Huxley strived to harmonize the scientific and artistic realms. In Literature and Science , he hones in on language as the stumbling block that divides the realms. He analyzes and discusses how scientists and literary artists use language differently to achieve their desired effects. Recognizing that many differences in language use must persist, he nevertheless urges both camps to seek mutual understanding and appreciation.
