Introduction to Social Justice in Social Work

It seems that you're in Germany. We have a dedicated site for Germany. Editors: Jansen , S. This book is an anthology of work by critical media scholars, media makers, and activists who are committed to advancing social justice. It drew the attention of researchers only slowly, but is now a field of intellectual excitement as well as practical significance - and this book is the best available guide to the emerging field. Sue Curry Jansen, Jefferson Pooley, and Lora Taub-Pervizpour have crafted a wonderfully rich collection that confronts vital questions for critical media scholars and media activists alike. The essays offer genuinely fresh insights about media justice and they affirm the value of collaborative work along the scholar-activist border.

Majority group members and men have an immense source of power at their disposal to prevent and confront bias in the workplace — their social networks. Most people think about their immediate circle of friends as their audience. Your ideas and behaviors ripple out from you, influencing your friends, friends of friends whom you may not even know, and friends of those friends as well. The implication is that you have enormous capacity to influence others to be anti-racist and to be anti-sexist in the workplace — those you know directly and individuals as much as three social steps away from you. But to make a real impact, you must move your conversations with colleagues, and what you share online, beyond value statements toward concrete anti-bias actions. Share your support for de-biasing your organization with your friends, tell them what actions you are taking to make your team fair and inclusive, and actively include more women and minorities in your informal networks. Millions of individuals around the world are protesting in solidarity with the Black Lives Matter movement, and many are asking themselves how they can bring the same spirit of solidarity into their work lives.

Social Justice Journalism: A Cultural History of Social Movement Media from Abolition to womensmarch argues that to better understand the evolution, impact, and future of digital social justice media we need to understand their connections to a venerable print culture of dissent. This cultural history seeks to deepen and contextualize knowledge about digital activist journalism by training the lens of social movement theory back on the nearly forgotten role of eight twentieth-century American social justice journals in effecting significant social change. The book deliberately conflates "social movement media" with newer and broader conceptions of "social justice journalism" to highlight changing definitions of journalism in the digital era. It uses framing theory, social movement theory, and theories about the power of facts and emotion in storytelling to show how social movement media practice journalism to mobilize collective action for their cause. The book concludes that digital activist journalism, while in some ways unique, also shares continuities and commonalities with its print predecessors.

Too many Americans — from our neighbors to our representatives in Congress — have no idea a civil justice crisis exists. We have to change that. And one of the most immediate ways to raise awareness is by leveraging the power of social media. Online we can share stories and help distill complex policy issues into understandable pieces to make the civil justice crisis more approachable for all people. As frequently as possible, make the connection for readers, specifically naming the concept of our broken civil justice system. Social media users scroll through hundreds of posts a day.

Social workers are passionate about serving others. They apply this passion to advocating for vulnerable groups of people like children, seniors and those with disabilities. Because of this, social work is tied to social justice, which often leads efforts to protect the rights of the previously mentioned groups. Social justice has to do with the belief that all people should have equal rights and opportunity. However, there is a lot of confusion about what exactly this means. To more fully understand social justice, it helps to examine its history.

The Social Justice Declaration is the third major statement of principles and policies adopted by the International Labour Conference. The Declaration is the outcome of tripartite consultations that started in the wake of the Report of the World Commission on the Social Dimension of Globalization. The Declaration promotes decent work through a coordinated approach to achieving four strategic objectives: employment, social protection, social dialogue, and fundamental principles and rights at work. The impact of the Declaration, in particular the extent to which it has contributed to promoting the aims and purposes of the Organization through the integrated pursuit of the strategic objectives, is the subject of a Conference review in The information for the report has been gathered from ILO member States, international organizations and ILO offices worldwide as well as external sources.

Use Your Social Network as a Tool for Social Justice
