The book has four parts consisting of 12 chapters. Its presentation sequenceis in good order: beginning with an overview of management issues folIowedby materials, traditional processes, machine tools, assembly, and nontraditionalprocesses. The author has included motivating case studies, worked-out examples, and sufficient homework questions.

The ilIustrations are all clear and appropriate. The description of manufacturing practices is detailed and lively while the formu-lation of mechanics models is relevant and scientific. Overall, the book is wellwritten and is good for a 4-year engineering curriculum. Additionally, practicingengineers may also find it useful. I The understanding of materials is very important to manufacturing en-gineering.

In fact, it is so important that a separate book covering mate-rials is often justified. Most academic institutions have materialscourses as a prerequisite to manufacturing, so the students enrolling inmanufacturing courses do not have to spend another 4 weeks just onmaterials. Many other textbooks overdo it by having several hundredpages on materials. Tlusty's book has a one-chapter overview and sum-mary on materials, which is exactly what most students need by thetime they start to take manufacturing.

While most of the com-petitive textbooks appear to be listings of procedures and observationsin manufacturing, Tlusty's book offers another important dimension ofanalytical reasoning of process mechanics. This aspect allows the read-ers to systematically design, estimate, forecast, and optimize variousoperations. It also makes the book suited for a text in a university cur-riculum or graduate school where analytical reasoning is important.

The book strikes me as being broad in coverageand yet focused and in-depth in analysis. At graduate-senior level, thebook can be used for a 3-credit semester course while the instructorhas some flexibility to choose his favorite subjects or to expand uponit. With the broad coverage, the book can be a resourceful referencefor practicing engineers as well,. On the other hand, the book may benefit from the inclusion of a wider discus-sion with respect to Part 3, particularly, the facilities and equipment for casting, forming, and polymer processing, etc.

These processing machines fit the definitionof machine tools in a broad sense. Additionally, it would be nice to have an over-view on newer developments such as rapid prototyping, metrology, micro manu-facturing, electronics manufacturing, etc. Steven Y. LiangThe George W. Никакое количество люстр под сводами не в состоянии осветить бесконечную тьму. Тени повсюду. И только в вышине витражи окон впускают внутрь уродство мира, окрашивая его в красновато-синие тона.
