Until recently, information exchange via various networks was slow and limited to diffusion through family, friends, and local communities. Today, information goes viral and spreads like electronic wildfire.

Although everyone is part of a social network, each person is only vaguely aware of his or her friends' friends and the ensuing global network to which all are connected. The study of social networks is only just now emerging. I can recall only a minor discussion in freshman biology about biological systems and social network theory. Certainly the typical high school experience is an in vivo study of social networks, in which popularity is often the goal. What most high school students do not realize is that influence is a more potent tool than mere popularity. It is safe to say there is much to learn about the complexity of social networks. Social Networks and Health explores the current concepts behind social networks and how peer relationships influence another person's behavior above and beyond his or her own inclination.

This manuscript discusses the development, impact, and several major research findings of studies in the area of social network support and health outcomes. The review focuses largely on the development of online social support networks and the ways in which they may interact with face-to-face support networks to influence physical and psychological health outcomes. Decades of research studies have found that our social networks and interpersonal relationships have a substantial impact on our physical health and our psychological well-being Burleson et al. Controlling for known determinants of morbidity and mortality, a number of studies have shown that people with low social support levels have a higher risk of mortality compared to people who have stronger and more satisfying support networks Berkman and Syme, ; Cohen et al. In addition to being positively correlated with health, positive types of social network support can reinforce health behavior change, while negative types of social network influence can undermine health behavior change Revenson et al. Metrics details. Obesity is a key risk factor for developing a long-term condition and a leading cause of mortality globally. The limited evidence associated with interventions that currently target obesity-related behaviours demand new approaches to tackle this problem. Given the evidence that social ties are implicated in the gaining and reduction of weight, the use of social networks in interventions is potentially a novel and useful means of tackling this health issue. There is a specific gap in the literature regarding what and how social network properties and processes together with environmental and individual factors influence the adoption of positive and negative obesity-related behaviours in adults. To address this gap in developing an integrated and holistic conceptual approach, a critical interpretative synthesis was undertaken following a line of argument synthesis as an analytical strategy. Twenty-four studies were included.
