Synopsis This text provides a self-contained introduction to Pure Mathematics. The style is less formal than in most text books and this book can be used either as a first semester course book, or as introductory reading material for a student on his or her own.

An enthusiastic student would find it ideal reading material in the period before going to University, as well as a companion for first-year pure mathematics courses. It moves onto analysis, providing a gentle introduction to epsilon-delta technology and finishes with Continuity and Functions.

It provides all that you have to do to make the calculus work. Geoff Smith's book is based on a course tried and tested on first-year students over several years at Bath University. Exercises are scattered throughout the book and there are extra exercises on the Internet. More items to explore. How to Study for a Mathematics Degree. Lara Alcock.

Verified Purchase. Content is very good summarised and explained. It serves perfectly as a base for any first year math undergraduate. I bought this for one of my children to try to explain what 1st year University pure maths was about.

It is written in an amusing style and I finally read in it what I had waited 30 years to have confirmed: that hyperbolic functions arise geometrically from drawing triangles on hyperbolae! Another highly recommended book of this sort is Martin Liebeck's A concise introduction to pure mathematics.

As said, this book is an amusing, interesting, practical and clear introduction to important topics in algebra and analysis even for people who do not have a very strong background in prerequisites but are willing to think.

I wish there would be more maths books written in similar style and with similar objectives! Highly recommend this book. Having met Mr Smith at a Bath University open day in and found him very insightful and amusing, the book lives up to my expectations too.

Son gaining lots from this book. One person found this helpful. Great little book. Found to be good refresher 5 years after completing a Maths degree. Really whet my appetite for further reading. Many of the explanations are not that clear although the topics are not difficult. It would be better to invest in good introductory textbooks on linear algebra, real analysis and abstract algebra.

I am looking for any recommendations or suggestions for a good book covering an introduction to the following; Relation , sets and functions, divisibility theory and modular arithmetic , groups, rings, ideals, fields, etc. It would also be best if it was to be introductory book as I have no prior courses done in algebra. I have knowledge up to multivariable calculus, but I don't think that will matter.
