Modeling of a Front-engine, Rear-wheel Drive Automobile Drivetrain

Four-wheel drive , also called 4x4 "four by four" or 4WD , refers to a two-axled vehicle drivetrain capable of providing torque to all of its wheels simultaneously. It may be full-time or on-demand, and is typically linked via a transfer case providing an additional output drive shaft and, in many instances, additional gear ranges. A four-wheel drive vehicle with torque supplied to both axles is described as "all-wheel drive" AWD. However, "four-wheel drive" typically refers to a set of specific components and functions, and intended off-road application, which generally complies with modern use of the terminology. Four-wheel drive systems were developed in many different markets and used in many different vehicle platforms. There is no universally accepted set of terminology that describes the various architectures and functions.

In automobile design, an FR , or front-engine, rear-wheel drive means a layout where the engine is in the front of the vehicle and drive wheels at the rear. This was the traditional automobile layout for most of the 20th century. This layout is typically chosen for its simple design and weight distribution. Placing the engine at the front gives the vehicle a traditional long hood in British English "bonnet" and engine cooling is simple to arrange. Placing the drive wheels at the rear allows ample room for the transmission in the center of the vehicle and avoids the mechanical problems of transmitting drive to steered wheels. The layout is still more suitable than front-wheel drive for engine outputs of more than about bhp, as the weight transference during acceleration loads the rear wheels and increases grip.

Four-wheel drive

A Drivetrain is a system which connects the transmission of a car to its driven axle. In simpler words, drivetrain involves all the systems and equipment which take power and torque produced by the engine, from the transmission to the driven wheels. A RWD system requires the engine and gearbox to be longitudinally mounted so that the drive can be sent straight to the differential at the rear. A RWD car will have the slight disadvantage of having lesser space inside the car, as the driveshaft will have to go underneath the body, which is why some cars have the bump in their floor.

Rear-engine, rear-wheel-drive layout

In automotive design , an RR , or rear-engine , rear-wheel-drive layout places both the engine and drive wheels at the rear of the vehicle. In contrast to the RMR layout , the center of mass of the engine is between the rear axle and the rear bumper. Although very common in transit buses and coaches due to the elimination of the drive shaft with low-floor bus , this layout has become increasingly rare [ specify ] in passenger cars. Most of the traits of the RR configuration are shared with the mid-engine rear-wheel-drive, or MR. Placing the engine near the driven rear wheels allows for a physically smaller, lighter, less complex, and more efficient drivetrain, since there is no need for a driveshaft , and the differential can be integrated with the transmission, commonly referred to as a transaxle.
