From Bacteria to Bach and Back: The Evolution of Minds is a book about the origin of human consciousness by the philosopher Daniel Dennett , in which the author makes a case for a materialist theory of mind, [1] arguing that consciousness is no more mysterious than gravity. Physician Harriet Hall reviewing the book for Skeptical Inquirer magazine, said that "Dennett is always worth reading, and this latest book distills his current thinking and all he has learned over the years". He discusses many "conundrums with facts and arguments from evolution and neuroscience". Hall suggests that this book is not for light reading, but well written, something you will need to think about as you ponder "how consciousness works and how it came about". In the Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera interviewed Tufts philosophy professor Daniel Dennett about his work. It might not be the story you were expecting, and you may not like it, but Dennett hopes to convince you of it nonetheless. The book attempts to explain how our minds work, and how they came into existence. For Dennett, these two questions are intimately related.

From Bacteria to Bach and Back by Daniel C Dennett review – consciousness explained?

These questions fascinate thinking people from poets and painters to physicists, psychologists, and philosophers. This is Daniel C. Dennett's brilliant answer, extending perspectives from his earlier work in surprising directions, exploring the deep interactions of evolution, brains and human culture. Part philosophical whodunnit, part bold scientific conjecture, this landmark work enlarges themes that have sustained Dennett's career at the forefront of philosophical thought. In his inimitable style, laced with wit and thought experiments, Dennett shows how culture enables reflection by installing a profusion of thinking tools, or memes, in our brains, and how language turbocharges this process.

But, as he confesses, he is an Author who Adores Alliteration. And Capitals. And Neologisms. Indeed, a German magazine once digitally edited together pictures of us sparring as bare-knuckle boxers. Despite this, and although he may well not thank me for it, there is much here that I agree with.

From Bacteria To Bach and Back is an ambitious book that attempts to integrate a theory about the evolution of the human mind with another theory about the evolution of human culture. It is advertised as a defense of memes, but conceptualizes memes more liberally than has been done before. It is also advertised as a defense of the proposal that natural selection operates on culture, but conceptualizes natural selection as a process in which nearly all interesting parameters are free to vary. This liberal conception of key concepts creates space for philosophical innovation, but occasionally makes the empirical content of the theory difficult to pin down. Nevertheless, the book is full of scientific insight, wit, and humor.
